One of the key factors contributing to the SEC's recent woes is, in my opinion, the quality of coaching hires. Some programs have made questionable decisions, opting for coaches who are not a good fit or represent a downgrade from their predecessors. Take Alabama, for instance. The departure of legendary coach Nick Saban left big shoes to fill, and the appointment of Kalen DeBoer, while not a bad coach, hasn't lived up to the Tide's legendary status. Similarly, Florida's coaching situation has been dire since Urban Meyer's exit, with three separate four-win seasons and the disastrous Billy Napier tenure.
Another SEC powerhouse, LSU, presents a more complex scenario. While Brian Kelly may be a better coach than Ed Orgeron in terms of X's and O's, the culture fit was never there. Orgeron's ability to delegate and recognize talent, along with the support of talented coordinators like Dave Aranda and Joe Brady, led to LSU's historic 2019 season. Kelly's lack of alignment with the 'LSU way' ultimately led to his downfall.
The other half of the equation is quarterback play. When the SEC was dominating, they had an abundance of talented quarterbacks like Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, and Joe Burrow, who elevated their teams to championship levels. However, since the Big Ten's rise, the balance of power at the quarterback position has shifted. The SEC seems to be missing out on the elite signal-callers, with talented quarterbacks often ending up on teams with little chance of winning the title. This talent disparity, combined with mediocre coaching, has contributed to the SEC's decline.
Despite these challenges, the SEC still has the potential to produce a championship team. Coaches like Kirby Smart, Lane Kiffin, and Steve Sarkisian have the ability to turn things around, and with talented quarterbacks like Arch Manning and Trinidad Chambliss leading strong teams, the league could break its drought in 2026. The SEC's talent pool remains deep, and with the right coaching and quarterback combinations, they could reclaim their dominance. It's an exciting time for college football fans, as we await the outcome of this power struggle between the SEC and the Big Ten.
